Meet Our Team

Fabio Botelho
MD MSc
Dr. Fabio Botelho is a trauma and pediatric surgeon from Minas Gerais, Brazil. He has just completed his Jean-Martin Laberge Global Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and is pursuing a Ph.D. degree at McGill University. His projects aim to improve the quality of care in pediatric trauma, mainly in low-and-middle-income countries, after exploring the issues of importing medical knowledge and interventions without proper adaptation. Dr. Botelho has worked with the Médecins Sans Frontières, Mercy Ships, and diverse medical societies such as the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Brazilian Pediatric Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, and Pediatric Trauma Society.

As pediatric trauma is a leading cause of child mortality and morbidity in several countries, Dr. Botelho believes this is his way to contribute to a better world.

Dan Poenaru
MD PhD
Dan is a professor of pediatric surgery at McGill University and senior scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center in Montreal, Canada. He has earned Masters degrees in Health Professions Education and International Development, and a doctorate in Health Strategy & Management. He is a FRQS- and CIHR-funded investigator in patient-centred surgical care, head of the McGill CommiSur Lab, director of the Jean-Martin Laberge Fellowship in Global Pediatric Surgery and founding member of the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS).
He has published over 160 scientific papers and several book chapters, and supervises multiple Masters’ and PhD students from Canada and across the world. His current areas of academic interest are patient-centered surgical care, technology-assisted surgical communication and medical education, and developing global surgical research capacity.

Elena Guadagno
MLIS
Elena is the Research Director working with the pediatric surgery team at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Prior to this, she worked as a senior librarian at the MUHC medical library. However, her career started in managing and designing Library Software. Her main interests lie in supporting improvement in patient & family centered patient care both in research and as a patient partner, pediatric surgery including Pediatric Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS), artificial intelligence in communication, virtual reality global health and more.

She is also national coordinator for multicentre research efforts through the Canadian Consortium of Pediatric Surgery (CanCORPS) and the Canadian Biliary Atresia registry (CBAR).
